What is The DOT Physical Exam?
The DOT physical exam is required as an occupational health screening in order to obtain a commercial driver's license or CDL license to transport goods on the highways of the United States. This physical test determines if you are a healthy individual and examines several aspects of your health to make certain you can operate a big rig properly. The exam is done by a certified medical examiner or chiropractor.
What Are the Specifics of Passing the DOT Exam?
In order to pass the exam, you must also have a peripheral vision and be able to tell the difference between red, green, and amber or yellow in order to see stoplights properly. A driver should be able to hear a loud whisper from five feet away with or without the use of hearing aids.
You must give a urine sample to test it for different types of protein, blood, or glucose which can be a sign of a serious medical condition.
Other CDL physical items that are accessed include weight, ears, heart, lungs and chest, abdomen and organs and extremities to make certain you will be able to perform you’re driving capably if you have enough strength, even if you are missing limbs. You will be neurologically assessed to make certain you have balance, good reflexes are stable, and have mental clarity and coordination for your CDL physical in order to get your CDL license.
How Long is My Health Screening Good For?
Your health screening and medical card are good for two years until you need to be examined again. There are some instances in which you can pass the exam and secure a health card for a shorter amount of time before you need to be re-examined.
